The realization of the new gas treatment plant is part of a bigger project included within a Memorandum of understanding for the redevelopment of Gela petrochemical area. Gas is extracted from Argo and Cassiopea offshore deposits (reserves of natural gas) situated off the coast of Gela and Agrigento thanks to undersea wells; then, it is transported through a 60-km long pipeline to a new gas treatment plant at Gela Biorefinery and, consequently, gas is fed into the national grid. The new aspect relies on the fact an undersea development has been studied, that is not having any visual impact and a reduction in atmosphere emissions is also planned because they are offset. The project includes also a redevelopment and reuse of the dismantled areas that will be integrated with existing facilities. The last important point to underline is the fact that the project itself perfectly comply with the will of increasing gas production from national deposits.
