The coal power plant started working between the Seventies and the Eighties. It is located in Aboño – Asturia and consists of different production units, even if some of them no longer work.
It played and still plays an important role for Spain energy production. Energy is not only produced from coal, but also from fuels.
The Aboño power plant is part of a group of 15 coal-fired power plants; but some of them have already been closed since 2020 and other ones will be dismantled in the next future after the new European directives came into force with the aim of reducing emissions into atmosphere.
For what concerns the Aboño power plant, redevelopment projects have been studied with the aim of a conversion to clean energy sources.
