Copper-nickel pipes
Among Tecra products range, you can find also copper-nickel pipes in rods that is copper-nickel alloys where nickel is highly concentrated compared to the other elements of the alloy. The function of nickel is to strenghten copper properties safeguarding good ductility.
Besides nickel, other elements can be added such as for example tin, iron, manganese and/or chromium to further reinforce properties; in particular:
- tin gives more elasticity;
- iron give more resistance to corrosion. In alternative, chromium can be added;
- manganese is used to not oxidate and sulfurize.
The most common types are 90/10 (90% of copper and 10% of nickel) and 70/30 (70% of copper and 30% of nickel). Among the types Tecra offers there are:
- CuNi10Fe1Mn: it is the most used in the marine field because it resists to corrosion, erosion and cavitation very well, but it is also used for heat exchangers production etc;
- CuNi30Mn1Fe: in this case nickel level is higher than that in the previous one; so, it is used in the same fields, but in more critical conditions;
- CuNI30Fe2Mn2: especially used for heat exchangers.
Copper-nickel alloys, also called Cu/Ni, are characterized by easy welding, good malleability, strong resistance to corrosion and erosion, low levels of fouling. For all these reasons, it is widely used in marine and submarine structures, in desalination plants, power plants also within nuclear plants, on oil rigs, in commercial and military shipbuilding industry for example to manufacture vessels keel, or for the production of heat exchangers, condensers and coolers.
