Since the beginning of the new Millenium the Country started a development process in which copper plays an important role with a high level of exportations in the world. Despite the economic crisis occurred few years later during which copper price sharply fell, the Zambian economy recovered fast especially with reference to the building industry and due to several investments in different economic fields (agriculture, telecommunications, infrastructures etc). The need of diversifying the economic activities arose and many efforts have been done to try to reduce the country dependence on copper. For this reason, attention has been put on other opportunities coming from agriculture, mining etc.
Despite the fact that Italy is not included among the main commercial partners, it has nevertheless been present for decades through investments contributing in the infrastructural development of the Country which is still poor from this point of view. For these reasons, Italy is still well appreciated by local companies. Moreover, some commercial agreements have been signed in the last years.
In the Seventies a deep economic (oil) crisis broke out and starting from that moment measures have been adopted to nationalize the economy generating the interruption of projects managed by important Italian Group. It is only since 2000 that the Italian presence in Zambia has been relaunched and it seems that after the last elections of 2021, there are now new opportunities also for foreign companies. Particular interest has been moved to energy (especially renewable energies), buildings and infrastructures. Interest has also been shown in the possibility of signing agreements with Italian companies thus sharing knowledge and experience useful for both countries; obviously this phenomenon will let some Italian companies enter again the Zambian market.
